From a flowering crop to aromatic oil: a Provencal ingredient craft shaped by the plant, the still and careful collection.
EUROPE TODAY / Beauty
A controlled transformation in the cauldron, followed by washing, setting and cutting.
Traditional cauldron soap-making is still carried out in the Marseille region. Vegetable oils are transformed by an alkaline solution and heat under the soapmaker's supervision. In the documented Marseille process, the soap mass passes through cooking and washing stages before it is dried or set, cut and finished. The maker's work includes controlling the batch and deciding when each operation is complete. Modern equipment can assist handling and forming, while the identity of this practice rests on the actual process and materials used in the working soapworks.
