Lavender Steam Distillation
From a flowering crop to aromatic oil: a Provencal ingredient craft shaped by the plant, the still and careful collection.
EUROPE TODAY / Beauty
From a flower field to an extract, then from measured materials to a scent composition.
In the Pays de Grasse, perfume-making connects growers, raw-material processors and perfumers. Cultivating fragrance plants calls for close knowledge of the plant and its environment; processing turns selected raw materials into usable aromatic ingredients. Distillation and extraction are chosen according to the material and the intended result. The perfumer combines aromatic ingredients in a measured composition, evaluating their relationships as the scent develops. Local vocational training continues to prepare technicians for production, laboratory and quality roles, while the regional practice also depends on sensory memory, judgement and creative interpretation.
