THE CRAFT EDIT

Stories from
the making.

This is GARDEN’s section about crafts still practised in Europe. It follows the materials, tools, gestures and finishing decisions behind clothing, bags, beauty and wooden interiors.

A living practice.

Stories draw on current craft organisations, professional training, occupational standards and other primary sources. A technique can be old while its practice is contemporary. The focus is how the skill is used, taught and developed today.

Look at what the photograph shows.

Images are credited with their source, date and reuse terms. Captions distinguish workshop work, demonstrations, equipment and raw materials. A demonstration illustrates a technique; it does not establish the production volume of a workshop or how a whole product was made.

The craft is the subject.

Each feature explains a working method and the choices it involves. Applications describe ways a technique is used, rather than promises about a particular product. Production times, quality guarantees and supplier relationships are included only when specifically documented.

Photographs and films.

Every story lists the photographer, original source and applicable licence alongside the pictures. Craft films use the source publisher’s player, with a link to the original film. The photographs are reused under their recorded terms. Full pictures can be opened from the story; card frames adapt to the page layout.
