A working craft, today.

Hand casting remains documented in contemporary French colour cosmetics. Pigments give a lipstick its shade; waxes and other fatty materials help give that shade a usable structure. The maker works with both colour and form, bringing a fluid mixture into a shape that can be held, advanced and applied.

Commercial French ateliers document work with metal moulds, while supervised colour-making workshops also teach weighing, casting and shaping. An instructional demonstration can use a flexible mould. These different tools support related decisions about filling, setting, release and the finished stick.

The most revealing moment is the release. A small, newly formed object must leave its mould without losing its surface or shape, then fit a container that can raise and retract it. Colour mixing, mould handling and assembly meet in that final movement. It is a close view of how a beauty product takes a physical form.

Inside the process.

An introduction to the sequence. Materials, tools and working methods vary with the project.

01

Develop the shade

A maker selects and weighs colouring materials, then works towards a consistent mixture. A published French cosmetics guide distinguishes the role of pigments from the structure supplied by waxes and the spread supplied by fatty binders.

02

Prepare the castable base

Bring the coloured components together with a melted fatty base. The maker works towards a mixture whose colour, texture and structure suit the intended cast form.

03

Fill the mould

Fill the prepared mould with the fluid mixture and allow it to set. Tooling can include metal moulds in commercial workshops or flexible moulds in an instructional demonstration.

04

Release and fit the stick

Once set, the shaped lipstick is carefully released and fitted to its mechanism or container. The mould guide stresses handling the stick without damaging it and checking that the mechanism can retract the product correctly.

THE DECISIONS BEHIND THE DETAIL

Where the skill shows.

  • The maker judges the blended shade as part of a physical cosmetic, where pigment and base must work together.
  • Mould preparation and accurate filling connect the fluid mixture with a usable finished shape; careless handling can affect its surface.
  • Demoulding and assembly need a light, deliberate touch. A cast stick must survive handling while still fitting and moving within its container.
