A working craft, today.

Leather bag making remains a working profession in France, combining material selection, cutting, preparation, assembly and finishing. An independent maker may follow much of the process, while larger workshops can divide the operations between specialists. Hand sewing is one method within this wider field, alongside machine sewing and other ways of joining parts. A two-needle saddle stitch requires prepared holes and controlled tension. The result depends on how these operations work together, from the first pattern to the finished seam and edge.

Inside the process.

An introduction to the sequence. Materials, tools and working methods vary with the project.

01

Prepare the leather

Check the material, cut and assemble the pieces, and align the seam to the working specification.

02

Mark and prepare the seam

Mark the stitch spacing, prepare the holes and wax the thread where the selected method requires it.

03

Work with two needles

Pass the threaded needles through the prepared seam by hand, controlling tension as the stitching progresses.

04

Set and finish

Set the seam, inspect thread placement and finish the exposed leather edges for the chosen design.

THE DECISIONS BEHIND THE DETAIL

Where the skill shows.

  • The stitch line joins the bag's parts and contributes to its visible proportions.
  • Regular preparation and controlled tension affect the consistency of the seam.
  • Edge finishing receives its own series of operations rather than being an incidental final touch.
