Your goal

Describe a foundation choice with more than a shade number.

Try it step by step

  1. Shade depth describes how light or deep a shade is; undertone describes its color direction. Brand labels do not translate perfectly across ranges.
  2. Coverage is the amount of visible skin detail; finish is the surface effect, such as matte or radiant. Decide on these separately.
  3. Use the brand's matching guidance and, where available, compare samples on your face near the jaw. Check the transition to the neck in ordinary daylight before choosing.

Practise this

Write a shortlist using three columns: shade, desired coverage and finish. Compare the same product on two occasions.

Check your result

The choice looks coherent across the face and neck and has the coverage you intended.

A common mistake

Choosing a shade only from the bottle, a screen swatch or a number used by another brand.
