Let skin preparation settle

Give moisturizer time to absorb before applying makeup. NARS treats primer as optional when your base already wears well.

Build thin layers

Use foundation to even the complexion, then concealer where more coverage is needed. Blend each step before adding the next one.

Match the order to the texture

A useful default is liquid, then cream, then powder. Put liquid or cream blush on before setting powder; powder blush can follow the set base.

Allow room for exceptions

Some formulas are designed to work in more than one position. Follow the instructions for the product you own rather than forcing every formula into the same sequence.

Try one change at a time

When a routine looks uneven, simplify the number of layers and change one application step. Keep a note of what gives you the finish you prefer.
